PART – B [16+16+8=40 Marks]
6 (a)
A rod of length 1 m and diameter 20 mm is subjected to a tensile load of 20 kN. The
increase in length of the rod is 0.30 mm and decrease in diameter is 0.0018 mm.
Calculate the Poisson’s ratio and three moduli.
(16)
OR
(b) A steel tube of 30 mm external diameter and 25 mm internal diameter encloses a
gunmetal rod of 20 mm diameter to which it is rigidly joined at each end. The
temperature of the whole assembly is raised to 150°C. Find the intensity of stress in
the rod when the common temperature has fallen to 20°C. The value of the young’s
modulus for steel and gunmetal are 2.1 x 105 N/mm2 and 1 x 105 N/mm2, respectively.
The coefficient of linear expansion for steel is 12 x 10-6/°C and for gunmetal is 20 x10-
6
/°C.
(16)
7 (a)
Derive the relationship between modulus of elasticity (E) and modulus of rigidity (G).
(16)
b) A hollow cylindrical drum of 750 mm in diameter and 2.5 m long has a shell
thickness of 10 mm. If the drum is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.6 N/mm 2,
determine
1. Change in diameter
2. Change in length
3. Change in volume
Take E=2.1 x 105 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio=0.3
(16)
8 (a) A thin cylindrical shell of 400 mm in diameter has shell thickness of 6 mm subjected
to an internal pressure which produces a strain of 1/2000 in diameter. Calculate the
internal pressure and corresponding hoop and longitudinal stresses. Take E=2.1x105
   N/mm2 and young’s modulus=0.26
    (8)
   OR
(b) A thin cylindrical pipe of internal diameter 1.5 m contains a fluid at a pressure of 1.87
N/mm2. Determine the thickness of the pipe wall if the hoop and longitudinal stresses
in pipe material are not to exceed 60 N/mm2 and 46 N/mm2, respectively.
